T shape constructs: this Bionicle part (http://www.ldraw.org/cgi-bin/ptdetail.cgi?s=111) was handy for that kind of structure, is was recently improved to full height: http://www.ldraw.org/cgi-bin/ptdetail.cgi?f=parts/32175b.dat
